Review - Enhancing early engagement with mental health services by young people

Abstract: International studies have shown that the prevalence of mental illness, and the fundamental contribution it make to the overall disease burden, is greatest in children and young people. Despite this high burden, adolescents and young adults are the least likely population group to seek help or to access professional care for mental health problems.

Teenagers, Technology and Mental Health

21st Century Medicine - Professor Ian Hickie: Teenagers, Technology, and Mental Health

As the burden of mental health disorders increases among young people, a major question is whether we can use new technologies to support high quality mental health care for more people at low cost. For many teenagers this might mean that such active technologies, such as smart phone apps, will replace counselling and other low-intensity interventions. The use of these technologies may assist to bring care to those who do not want to engage with traditional forms of clinical care or those who are excluded by geography, disability or socio-economic status.

"You Keep Me Believing" - Sam Ross

A young person's self belief....... How can we help them have a sense of worth if they live with little or no affirmations from family or friends?

Sam Ross of "The Teenage Whisperer" discusses this further.....

Our job, while it may be to re-educate, to offer perspective, to change behaviour, to prompt a rethink in the minds of young people, or to provide advice or support, can’t successfully be any of these things unless the underlying message or mission is to build them up. To help them believe that they are capable of thinking differently, of doing life differently, that no matter how hard their life circumstances may have been or still be, that they can overcome. - See more at: http://www.teenagewhisperer.co.uk/self-belief-self-worth-low-self-esteem-hope-troubled-teens/#sthash.meNrXaPL.dpuf

Charity boss challenges accuracy of 'at risk' data | Children & Young People Now

The founder and director of Kids Company said methods used by local authorities to identify and classify children at risk do not reflect actual levels because if they did child protection services would be unable to cope with the demand. -

"How safe are our children?" - NSPCC - 2014

The NSPCC has published the How safe are our children? 2014 report.

It compiles the most robust, up-to-date child protection data that exists across each of the four nations in the UK. Key messages include: child protection is turning into an emergency service which can only react to the most serious cases due to insufficient early support services, more families struggling financially and higher thresholds.

Online risk, harm and vulnerability: Reflections on the evidence base for child Internet safety policy

Excerpt:

"Implicitly, if not always explicitly, policy initiatives assume particular motives,
knowledge and practices on the part of children. These assumptions may be well
founded or, instead, unnecessarily anxious or already dated. If we think young people are living their leisure lives alone in their bedrooms, we will take a different view
of social support they may need compared with if we see them as richly embedded
in their peer group. If we see them as strong and able to cope with what life throws
at them, the policy agenda will take a different direction compared with if we see
them as at risk. Here lies the value of direct research with children and their lifeworld
online as well as offline"

PSYCHOTHERAPY 2.0 Where Psychotherapy and Technology Meet

‘This book explores the implications of the digital world for talking
therapies. It covers both the theoretical and the practical, from the way
the internet might challenge and change current practice, to thinking about
the legalities and training required to set up as an online practitioner. The
book also covers the exciting new ways in which digital technology is
extending our concept of therapy to include new communities, new ways of working, and delivering support. It’s
written with a broad audience in mind, so whether you’re just starting to learn about digital technologies, or are
a fully-immersed “digital native”, this book will have something for you.’
